Background of the Study
Diabetes mellitus is a growing public health concern in Nigeria, with increasing prevalence due to lifestyle changes, poor dietary habits, and low awareness of disease management. In Sokoto State, where a significant portion of the population suffers from type 2 diabetes, the role of nutrition literacy in diabetes management has gained attention. Proper nutritional knowledge is essential for individuals with diabetes, as it helps in maintaining blood sugar levels, preventing complications, and improving overall quality of life (Ogunleye et al., 2023). However, many adults in Sokoto State lack adequate nutrition literacy, which affects their ability to make informed dietary choices necessary for effective diabetes management.
Nutrition literacy refers to an individual's ability to understand, interpret, and apply nutrition-related information to maintain health and prevent diseases. Studies have shown that individuals with higher nutrition literacy tend to have better glycemic control and are more likely to adhere to dietary recommendations (Abubakar et al., 2024). Despite this, there is limited research on the connection between nutrition literacy and diabetes management in Sokoto State. Given the rising cases of diabetes-related complications, such as kidney failure and cardiovascular diseases, it is essential to investigate the impact of nutrition literacy on diabetes self-care practices.
This study seeks to examine the relationship between nutrition literacy and diabetes management among adults in Sokoto State. By identifying gaps in nutritional knowledge and its influence on health behaviors, the findings will provide insights into strategies for improving diabetes care and nutrition education in the region.
Statement of the Problem
Diabetes remains a major health challenge in Sokoto State, with many affected individuals struggling to manage the condition due to poor nutrition literacy. While dietary control is a crucial component of diabetes management, many adults lack the necessary knowledge to make informed food choices. This gap in nutrition literacy contributes to poor glycemic control, increasing the risk of diabetes complications.
Existing health interventions have focused on providing general diabetes education, but there is limited emphasis on nutrition-specific literacy. Many diabetes patients rely on traditional dietary practices, some of which may not align with modern nutritional guidelines. Furthermore, low literacy levels and limited access to professional nutrition counseling exacerbate the problem.
This study aims to assess the impact of nutrition literacy on diabetes management in Sokoto State and explore strategies to improve dietary awareness among adults living with diabetes.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of nutrition literacy among adults with diabetes in Sokoto State.
2. To evaluate the impact of nutrition literacy on diabetes management and glycemic control.
3. To identify the challenges associated with improving nutrition literacy among diabetic patients.
Research Questions
1. What is the level of nutrition literacy among adults with diabetes in Sokoto State?
2. How does nutrition literacy influence diabetes management and glycemic control?
3. What challenges hinder the improvement of nutrition literacy among diabetic patients?
Research Hypotheses
1. Higher nutrition literacy levels lead to better diabetes management and glycemic control.
2. There is a significant relationship between nutrition literacy and adherence to dietary recommendations.
3. Socio-economic factors and education levels impact nutrition literacy among diabetic adults.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on adults diagnosed with diabetes in Sokoto State, assessing their level of nutrition literacy and its impact on diabetes management. The research may be limited by self-reported dietary data, which can introduce biases. Additionally, variations in literacy levels and socio-economic conditions may affect the generalizability of the findings.
